The VTRCC fully supports the decision of the Town Council and worked with the Town to get the word out to the community that the parade was cancelled. As a way to thank our sponsors, the parade committee, Public Works for the Town of Vienna, and everyone who was involved in Parade planning, the VTRCC held its “Pre Parade” mixer at SunTrust Bank. A SPECIAL thanks goes to Vienna Inn (provided chili-dogs and wings), Premier Wine Cellar (provided wine) and Jammin’ Java (provided coffee) for their sponsorship of the mixer. Because of their support and that of SunTrust Bank, the mixer was a huge success and helped to make the best out of a bad situation. The grand marshals were Eric Cox and Gina Richard, owners of Cox Farms, which is celebrating 30 years in business. Chris Orlando, Halloween Parade Committee Chair, Kathy Salgato, Director of Public Works, and all the committee members did an outstanding job. Thank You to all our Sponsors

U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is co-sponsoring the Small Office / Home Office (SOHO) loan initiative with the SBA Washington Metropolitan Area District Office, Innovative Bank, the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and the Small Business Development Centers (SBDC). Under the initiative, as part of the SBA CommunityExpress program, eligible businesses will not only be able to obtain a business loan, but also receive technical assistance from SCORE and SBDC business counselors. SBA will guarantee up to 85 percent of the loans. Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) reports the number and size of bundled contracts issued by federal agencies has reached a 10-year high, to the detriment of small business. Small businesses received only 16.7 percent of bundled federal contract dollars in fiscal year 2001, and 20 percent of all federal prime contract dollars. At the same time, Office of Advocacy research shows that small businesses employ over half of all private sector workers, generate more than half of the private sector output, and generate more than two-thirds of net new jobs. The report, “The Impact of Contract Bundling on Small Business” written by Eagle Eye Publishers, indicates that the increase in bundled contracts is largely driven by the addition of dissimilar tasks on existing contracts. The study found that a primary source of these contracts is the Department of Defense. For more information, visit the Office of Advocacy website at http://www.sba.gov/advo. SBA and Staples, Inc. are cosponsoring a free, interactive e-mail newsletter - SBA Solutions, providing small business owners the latest news and information on the U.S. Small Business Administration’s loan programs and services. The inaugural edition of SBA Solutions made its debut in September. For a free subscription to the SBA Solutions newsletter, go online at http://web.sba.gov/list/. U.S. Small Business Administration – As federal agencies across the government begin operations under a short-term continuing budget resolution, they implemented a $500,000 limit on most guaranteed loans – a step that will leave the vast majority of its small business credit customers unaffected. “This is not a step that we take lightly, but after weighing the facts, this is the best solution to the strict limits placed on our total loan authority by the continuing resolution,” said SBA Administrator Hector V. Barreto. “Fully 87 percent of 7(a) loans made to small businesses in 2002 are under $500,000. The alternatives are frequent program shutdowns within days of the passage of each continuing resolution until our 2003 budget is passed.” For more information about all of the SBA’s programs for small businesses, call the SBA Answer Desk at 1-800 U ASK SBA or TDD 704-344-6640. The McLean Branch of the American Association of University Women wishes to thank Mr. John Bell and the staff at the SunTrust Bank at 515 Maple Avenue in Vienna for allowing AAUW to hold biweekly book collections at the bank this summer. John Miller, Vice President (Operations) for the James Madison High School (JMHS) Crew Boosters Club, has launched a Crew team this year, has incorporated its Booster Club, owns two exercise machines and a powered motor launch, and has ordered two racing shells. His team, a member of the National Capital Area Scholastic Rowing Association, currently has 24 girls and 6 boys paid members. Mr. Miller is asking Chamber members if they may have a space available for his rowers to set up their rowing machines, and for them to use for supervised training purposes after school and on weekends. His team would need the facility until June of 2003. Currently his team has two rowing machines and anticipates acquiring 5-10 more in the very near future. The total required space is approximately the size of a racquetball court. It would be most helpful if the space was heated, had access to a bathroom, and was relatively close to the high school, or at least in the area of Vienna. The space needs to be lockable, secure, and safe from the elements. Mr. Miller is hoping that one of the Chamber members may have such a space available to lease to the Booster Club for no cost (or a very low cost). The cost of our purchasing the boats is such that his is unable to budget for training space at market rates. The Booster Club is a non-profit organization. If you would like to donate training space, contact John Miller at JMiller483@aol.com. New Members You’ll Like Doing Business With The following businesses were approved for membership at the September-October VTRCC Board of Directors meetings. Please welcome them.
