Chairman's Message It seems hard to believe that my term as Chairman will soon be over. It has been a wonderful year and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve our Chamber. I’d like to touch on some of our accomplishments and express appreciation to the many people that made this year successful and challenging. I’d like to start by expressing thanks to Gary for his assistance, energy and support. He tolerated my NUMEROUS calls to the office, his home and his cell, and I know he welcomes some new leadership! Although I’ve only had a short time working with Claire Liston, it is obvious she is a great addition to our staff, and we welcome her knowledge and expertise in so many areas! The members of the Board of Directors are to be commended for their commitment of time, loyalty and carrying on their respective roles. Thanks also to all of the Committee members who came forth and participated in all our activities this year. I was thankful for the “old” members who lent a helping hand, and thrilled to see so many “new” folks join in and get involved… heartfelt thanks to you all! Thanks to our Treasurer, George Hratch who kept us in line financially, and to our attorney, Matt Brennan who kept us out legally in line! Our Newsletter is a monthly delight... thanks to our Editor, Susan Ellis. I think we would all agree that one of our greatest accomplishments this year has been the creation of our website!! To Nautilus Communications, we thank you for your creativity, innovation and support of our Chamber. Additional thanks go to our Newsletter and Web Page Sponsors, Whole Foods and Northwest Federal Credit Union. A special thanks also to the various members who sponsored individual events. All of our Fund Raisers were successful and enjoyed by all: The Carnival, Golf Tournament and Casino Night. We broke records in attendance and proceeds at all THREE EVENTS. Our two new events launched this year, the Tysons Business Forum and the Scavenger Hunt, were a total success. Although the “sniper incident” prohibited us from our annual Halloween Parade, we did recognize our Chairman, Chris Orlando, and Cox Farms as “Grand Marshall” at the traditional mixer. This did not prevent us from having a successful Health Fair, as well as Legislative Meetings and quarterly meetings with our Mayor, which were held on a regular basis. A few of us participated in the Annual Chamber Day in Richmond, meeting not only with our local Legislators, but the Governor and Attorney General. Two new Tip Groups were organized and are functioning effectively. Many of our events were held at new locations, supporting new members. A successful Youth and Education luncheon was held, as we were once again, touched by the talent and brilliance of our children surrounding our community. More Ribbon Cutting events took place, with new members taking advantage of business recognition and exposure to the Community. Our Brochure is being redesigned and will be completed very soon. We have taken an aggressive approach to membership this year, and the final numbers will be announced at our June luncheon. Our annual membership drive was celebrated at the Third Sip & Sample, held in late April. Our Ambassadors were kept busy delivering packets to new members and making sure our new members were treated with special “TLC” at all our events! It was indeed a busy year, busier than I imagined. I took my role seriously and served our Chamber the best I could. I thank each and every one of you for your support and unconditional commitment of time. EACH OF YOU is responsible in helping our Chamber move in the direction of continued growth, new challenges and greater visibility in our Community. I wish Amelia a personal farewell from our Board. She has served actively for six years, and is well deserving of a “Board Rest”. To my successor, Bob Stemetzki, and his Board of Directors, I wish you continued success and great achievements in the coming Chamber year, 2003-2004. Renee Younes VTRCC Anniversaries The VTRCC is happy to acknowledge members who have belonged to the Chamber for many years. Those celebrating anniversaries during May/June are:
Membership Campaign Mark Chernisky reported “hundreds and hundreds of businesses in Tysons and Merrifield have been called, and many prospects and new memberships have been generated.” Many new members attended the Sip and Sample organized by veteran Membership Committee Member, Jerry Magri at SunTrust on April 22. The winners of the membership contest will be announced soon. Check the www.vtrcc.org for further details. Legislative Affairs From Delegate Jeannemarie Devolites The 2003 Legislative and Reconvened Sessions were extremely challenging. Considering the state of the economy and our limited resources, I believe that the General Assembly did an outstanding job of prioritizing. Members of the Northern Virginia delegation introduced legislation that would have changed the funding formulas for both education and transportation, bringing more dollars back to the region. Unfortunately, none of those bills made it out of committee. It is important for you to know that the delegation continues to offer this legislation, which enables us to educate our colleagues, from the other regions, about our needs here in Northern Virginia. Governor Warner has a good pro-business record, but took two anti-business positions during the Reconvened Session. He vetoed the "death tax" bill, which would have phased out this unfair tax, in conjunction with the Federal Government's phase out. The House overrode the veto, however, the Senate was short two votes. The Governor also amended SB889, which codifies the Commission on Unemployment Compensation. The Governor's amendment would have had the Commission compare the Commonwealth's maximum benefit amount and recipiency rate with that of DC, MD, WV, NC & SC. The House felt that a comparison of those figures with those of anti- right to work states, would create an argument that Virginia wasn't doing enough, thereby resulting in increased unemployment tax payments. The House rejected the amendment, in an effort to protect the small business community. It is a privilege to represent you in the Legislature and I invite you to contact me if I can ever be of service to you. From Senator George Allen As you may know, I am one who trusts free people and free enterprise. I always look for opportunities for Virginians and Americans to compete and succeed, because we live in a world of competition. We need to make sure that every individual has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling life. The government’s role is to make sure that we have competitive tax and regulatory policies to provide the proper environment for opportunities and investment. American small businesses are the job-creators, investors and risk-takers. It is important that lawmakers support this engine of our economy, which creates about three-quarters of all new jobs, by ensuring that our tax, regulatory, education and health care policies help create an environment that allow Americans to compete and succeed. In this congressional session, we will continue our work to enact policies that encourage entrepreneurial innovation, growth and expansion. We want to take action to help accelerate the growth of our economy, such as making the 2001 tax cuts permanent. I want to explore ways to improve access, choice and affordability of medical care plans for small business owners. I want to continue to seek ways to improve our education system, such as tax breaks to help parents afford technology such as computers, educational software and Internet access that will help our children compete in the future. It is vital if we are to attract new jobs and investment that we not stay on the sidelines, and I want to applaud the Vienna-Tysons Chamber of Commerce for its active role in these efforts. I look forward as a member of the new majority to working with you all to look for new opportunities that will continue to make Virginia a great place to live, learn, work and raise our families. Business/Community News Small Business Administration - If current trends in banking continue, small businesses may find greater availability of funds for growth and job creation. The expansion of large bank holding companies and the increased use of credit scoring for small business loans should make it easier to securitize small business loans for the secondary market. Kormendi/Gardner Partners address in their new study, "An Exploration of a Secondary Market for Small Business Loans," the nature of the secondary market in conventional small business loans and how current trends have the potential to affect that market. The development of a secondary market for small business loans improves the flow of capital to entrepreneurs. In a secondary market, loans are pooled together and packaged as securities for sale to investors. This practice makes more capital available by allowing lenders to remove existing loans from their balance sheets, freeing them to make new loans. For more information about the study visit www.sba.gov/advo/research/rs227_tot.pdf A Day for Every Woman will inspire, pamper and recharge attendees in an event that celebrates being a woman.
