What’s Your “Field of Dreams”?
By Dan Williams
Founder, The Networking Community

Did you ever see the film Field of Dreams? It's a story inside a story. I get totally absorbed relating movies to the art and science of building a business. I relate sports games to business as well. So I was in heaven watching Field of Dreams, a movie about the return of baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1919 Chicago Black Sox. It’s about a simple Iowa man (Kevin Costner) with a vision for his cornfield, and his journey to achieve it. Ask yourself: What is your field of dreams?

When your vision aligns with your business skills, magic happens. But following the movie’s storyline, we see that our dreams need support from those who believe in us. Annie (Holly Hunter) supported her husband's vision, yet he finds it necessary to travel east to Boston so that he can enlist the support of a famous but secluded writer (James Earl Jones), and north to Minnesota to talk to an old doctor (Burt Lancaster) who never got the chance to play with the pros.

It takes a support team beyond the players on the diamond to realize our dreams. And we must have unwavering commitment for our supporters to also keep the faith. Soon they will begin to believe that maybe, just maybe, this is not a dream. Each has a key position to play moving us toward our ultimate goal. We all win. Just like the "doc" who finally got to play pro ball, we can all help our support team realize their dreams.
The movie whispers “If you build it, they will come,” but real life isn’t that simple. No matter how grand the plan, after you build your baseball diamond (or your business) no one will come until you get out there and make it happen. It's called creating awareness through networking. It’s ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration. It's hard work. That is why we call it Networking. It requires you to leave “your cornfield" and bring 'em back—over and over again. Create the awareness. Interest will come next, then trust and confidence.

Don't miss the July 29 Chamber 101!

Here's how to play ball:

TRCC is the club that provides stadiums, fields, and players for our networking game. They even offer “batting clinics”, teaching networking fundamentals at the Networking 101 before mixers. Each week, VTRCC sponsors lead share groups, all for your taking. But to take advantage of these member benefits, you have got to participate. You need to suit up and show up with your business cards. In addition to expanding your business, friendships are also built. When you need flowers, insurance, brochures, a new home, telephone systems… they are all available through your membership and active VTRCC participation.

It's feeling like summertime, so follow your dreams and swing for the fences. Make networking your game. It’s a game that will allow you to reach your field of dreams.

To Your Networking Success!

The VTRCC’s new Board of Directors took their oath of office at our June 10th Luncheon at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar. WJLA-TV’s John Harter, shown above (right) with 2003-2004 Chair Bob Stemetzki and 2004-2005 Chair Maris Angolia, inducted the board and entertained attendees with an engaging address.

Message from the Chairman
By Maris Angolia
2004-2005 Chairman of the Board

I’m glad to have this opportunity to welcome you to the 2004-2005 VTRCC year! As the newly inducted Chairman of the Board, I know I have big shoes to fill! My thanks to Bob Stemetzki and the 2003-2004 Board for providing such a great platform that we can build on.

VTRCC holds many exciting events throughout the year—be sure to read each Enterprise or visit www.vtrcc.org to see the calendar of events and the happenings of each committee. Looking ahead, make sure you mark your calendars for the Golf Tournament (October 4th) and Taste of the Town/Casino Night (March 12th).

I encourage you to get involved. When our business moved to Vienna nine years ago, the first thing we did was join the VTRCC. Before I knew it, I was on several committees, chairing events and then on the Board of Directors! This has brought much new business and many new friendships. Look through the committee descriptions, visit some of their meetings and then decide which are the best fit for you. It is truly a rewarding experience to be a part of the VTRCC.

We are fortunate to have so many diverse industries, as well as small merchants and professional services in our area. The Vienna-Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce provides a great forum to learn about our community, our businesses and our history.

Again, welcome to the 2004-2005 VTRCC year… the Board of Directors and I look forward to serving you!

Legislative Affairs
By Jane Seeman
Mayor of Vienna

The World War II Memorial was recently dedicated to honor the veterans of that war. On Memorial Day we remembered those who gave their lives in the service of our country. The death of former President Ronald Reagan reminds us of the end of the Cold War and of his legacy in bringing prosperity and hope to America. Martin Luther King, Jr. brought our country together through long overdue integration. These men and women are all heroes. They are national heroes.

Other Legislative News: Delegate Steve Shannon will hold "Community Hours" for constituents of the 35th District in the Meeting Room of the Patrick Henry Library, 101 Maple Avenue East, on Saturday, July 17, August 14 and September 18 from 10 a.m.-Noon. No appointment required. Visit our new online office at delegatesteveshannon.com. Click here to sign up for our newsletter!

In Vienna we have hometown heroes. Former Mayor Charles A. Robinson, Jr. had a vision of Vienna and it is largely through his work that we have a town we are proud to call home. This month the Vienna-Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce will recognize citizens and business people who have contributed to Vienna and the business community in the Vienna-Tysons area.

Many hometown heroes are known only to their neighbors and friends. These are people who make an impact in their neighborhoods, schools, work places and organizations through volunteer service. The annual Volunteer Recognition Reception held every April is one way to honor those who daily make Vienna a better place to live. These people contribute their time with a smile and go out of their way to help others. Volunteers see a need and act on that need. Everyone can make a difference. In the past three years over 60 individuals and 5 groups have been recognized. In the coming months look around for those who quietly give their time to the community. Remember them for next year's Volunteer Recognition Reception.

U.S. Small Business Administration

  • The federal government is making a $3 billion upward revision to the total number of prime contract dollars awarded to small businesses in the 2003 fiscal year. The new total of $65.5 billion represents a 23 percent jump over fiscal year 2002 and sets a new record for small business prime contracting. The revised number also confirms that the federal government exceeded its own statutory requirements for small business contracting in 2003. The $65.5 billion that was awarded to small businesses in 2003 represents 23.6 percent of the total number of prime contract dollars awarded by the federal government.
  • The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has agreed to work with the Office of Advocacy and more fully consider impacts on small business. This understanding was reached as part of settlement discussions between Advocacy and the FCC regarding the case of United States Telecom Association, et al., v. the Federal Communications Commission, et al. In the settlement, the Office of Advocacy agreed to withdraw its intent to file an amicus curiae brief in the case. In addition to working with Advocacy, the FCC agreed to urge state regulators to consider the concerns of small rural telecom providers that seek waivers to the new portability rules. The FCC will also examine the impact of its policies on small business in upcoming proceedings. The continuing case involves a Regulatory Flexibility Act (RFA) challenge to an FCC memorandum opinion and order on telephone number portability. The small business plaintiffs contend that the FCC did not fulfill its obligations under the RFA by not considering the impact of its rule on small business and by not considering alternatives to reduce its burden. Advocacy will work closely with the FCC to ensure that the settlement terms are implemented, and that the voice of small business is heard in FCC deliberations. These small business accommodations are in addition to any remedies that may be ordered in the case.
  • Veteran-owned firms receive substantially more federal contract dollars than official figures show, according to a study released by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The discrepancy results from inconsistent status coding of contracts across federal agencies and from difficulties in identifying veteran-owned businesses. Official statistics from the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS) indicate that veteran-owned businesses were awarded 0.6 percent of total prime contract dollars in Fiscal Year (FY) 2002 and 0.4 percent in FY 2001. However, according to the new analysis veteran-owned businesses received at least 1.7 percent of prime contract dollars in FY 2002 and 1.6 percent in FY 2001.

A community Flea Market will be held on Saturday, July 31 from 9am - 1pm at Frying Pan Park in Herndon. The vendor fee is only $30 for a 12' x 24' space and proceeds benefit the Park Authority's Volunteer Program and the Friends of Huntley Meadows Park. Call 703-324-8750 for a registration form. Spaces sold out in previous years for this popular event, so early registration is recommended. There is no charge for shoppers.
  • The FCPA Board adopted a Green Procurement Policy earlier this month. The action, taken on June 9th, integrates environmental considerations into all aspects of purchasing goods, services and construction while maintaining cost effectiveness. While the policy does not change the Park Authority's compliance with contract awards pursuant to the Fairfax County Purchasing resolution, it does require that purchases meet certain environmentally sound criteria. The Park Authority Purchasing Branch procures a wide variety of goods and services each year valued at approximately $13 million in support of various activities of the Park Authority.
