PREMO Offers Free Food,
Wine or Massage!

Shop at the Chamber's PREMO businesses during August and September and you can win free food from the Pie Gourmet, a gift basket from Premier Wine Cellars, or a free massage from Northern Virginia Massage Center.

First you may ask, "What is PREMO?" P.R.E.M.O. stands for Premier Rewards Exclusively for Members Only. The PREMO program was launched a couple of years ago to give members a reason to shop at other Chamber members' places of business. The concept is that by offering discounts and/or more for your money, PREMO participants encourage Chamber members to choose them over non-member businesses. The program has experienced moderate success, but remains quite under-utilized. So to further the program's impact, the Board of Directors has approved a great contest!

How easy it is to win the prizes listed above? It's as easy as spending money you may normally spend, but doing so at PREMO businesses and saving your receipts. Beginning immediately, any member who spends $500 quarterly at PREMO businesses (with a minimum of 10 receipts) will qualify for one these special prizes: $50 gift certificate to Pie Gourmet; 1 hour massage from Northern Virginia Massage Center; or a gift basket from Premier Wine Cellars valued at $100-$150! The list of PREMO participants is available at vtrcc.org/premo.htm. Winners for the 3rd quarter of 2004 will be announced at the October luncheon.

Watch for the next phase of our PREMO promotion to be announced at the October luncheon! We'll again have great prizes for spending your dollars at PREMO businesses during the months of October, November and December. Good luck and we'll see you shopping at PREMO locations!

(One PREMO card was sent to each Chamber member in July. To purchase additional cards ($5 each) or to become a PREMO business, please contact the Chamber office at 703-281-1333.)

Business Success Story

MALCOLM RIDDLE
Premier Wine Cellars

Malcolm Riddle is a man with a passion - for his business, for his customers, for his community. His passion is fired by his vision of extraordinary customer service underwritten by a special personal touch, highest standards of integrity, and unswerving commitment to go the extra mile. Malcom is a remarkable guy whose business is clearly on the move.

A little over two years ago, he opened the doors of Premier Wine Cellars in Tysons Corner, with little more than a few cases of wine set out in the front of his store area. Riddle's store was somewhat off the beaten path, and customer traffic was initially pretty light. After trying various publicity ventures and then checking out other organizations, he joined the Vienna-Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce. Riddle enlisted their guidance and support and then the real progress began. The Chamber assisted by helping to draw attention - and customers - to his business. Working with the Chamber, he came up with ideas for events that provided attractive outreach to clients in the community. Specifically, he developed an informative email newsletter to market his products and services. He began regular Friday evening and Saturday afternoon wine-tastings - which continue to this day to develop and cultivate a solid customer base. He's even added art shows to complement his fine wine offerings and he even helps to showcase budding musical artists at his facility. He strongly believes that his success is intertwined with that of his community.

To cap it off, in early July of this year he was recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year by the Vienna-Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce. Yes, Malcolm Riddle certainly richly deserves this recognition - and your patronage. Come see him at 8486-I Tyco Road, in Tysons Corner or call him at 1-800-810 VINO (local number (703) 556-0290.

Message from the Chairman
By Maris Angolia, 2004-2005 VTRCC Chairman

It's hard to believe that its September and Back-to-School time! I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are ready for a wonderful Chamber year. The VTRCC Board has been busy planning many activities for the 2004-2005 year. I offer many thanks to all the board members for their diligent planning and commitment.

How are we doing?
As a member organization, we deeply value the input of our members. If you have any comments, compliments or suggestions about our programs or events, don't hesitate to use our Feedback Form which is located on our website at www.vtrcc.org/feedback.htm. The form is also available in the Chamber office and at our events. Please feel free to leave input anonymously or to request a response from our President or Chairman of the Board of Directors.

We kicked off the PREMO Rewards Program (see above article), which gives VTRCC members discounts and benefits at our fellow Chamber businesses. Make sure you save your receipts - 10 or more receipts totaling $500 will earn great prizes! Many thanks to Jodi Scholes, Northern Virginia Massage Center, and her committee for all their hard work!

Please plan to attend our annual Golf Tournament on October 4th at Westwood Country Club. Even if you are not a golfer, there are many ways for you to participate. Debbie Earman of Long & Foster Realtors and her committee welcome you to be a sponsor or a volunteer. It's a Captain Choice format, so even if you're not a good golfer, you can still have lots of fun and really only have to hit 2 or 3 decent shots! There are also 50-50 raffle tickets for sale, benefiting The Women's Center of Vienna. The winner will likely take home more than $1500! To buy tickets (one for $5, eight for $25), contact the Chamber office or any Board Member.

I also wanted to welcome our new members and encourage you to get involved. There are so many opportunities for sponsorships and networking. Check out the website www.vtrcc.org often for news and updates. Let the Chamber work for you and your business! Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Governor Reflects On Achievements At Mid-Term

As Virginia begins a new two-year budget cycle, there is much to celebrate in the Commonwealth. Our economy is growing at the second fastest rate of any state in the nation, driven in no small measure by growth in the Vienna and Tysons Corner area. Several objective measures show our schools are making significant progress toward higher standards and stronger student achievement. And perhaps most importantly, we have successfully confronted a severe fiscal crisis while avoiding the diminished services, lowered credit ratings and dimmer prospects for economic growth and new jobs that affected so many other states.

To achieve these victories, we have remained firmly committed to fiscal responsibility. In the Spring, we completed - with strong bipartisan support - a comprehensive reform of our budget and tax code. Few people gave our legislation much of a chance when I introduced it last fall. But we had confidence in the people of Virginia, and they responded to our simple message that government should honor and pay for the commitments it makes to its citizens. The budget and tax reform package makes our tax code more fair, meets our core commitments in vital public services, and preserves Virginia's good credit. In May, Wall Street reaffirmed our AAA bond rating.

Going forward, we'll continue to insist that state government live within its means and give taxpayers the best return on their investment. This is why we have embarked on a series of innovative reforms in areas ranging from state government's procurement of goods and services to basic, long-overdue reforms at VDOT.

We have been equally committed to education. Our budget contains the largest single increase in education funding in Virginia's history - almost $1.5 billion in new money for our public schools. We have launched reforms intended to strengthen high school and improve chronically under-performing schools. We have instituted a series of Performance Reviews to help find saving and other efficiencies in public school budgets. And we helped this summer's graduating seniors meet the requirements of the standards of learning through Project Graduation, which offered targeted, remedial help to students at-risk of failure. Equally important, we have also made protecting Virginia's colleges, universities, and community colleges a high priority. Again, bipartisan support has been crucial.

Of course, with the bipartisan support of the General Assembly, Virginia has made enormous progress in other areas as well, ranging from homeland security and the environment to transportation and the creation of more than 50,000 new jobs for Virginians. More remains to be done. But with the economic picture growing brighter, I am excited by the opportunities ahead.

Fairfax County Government

  • Fairfax County's Meals on Wheels program is facing a critical shortage of volunteers. Currently the agency is in need of volunteers throughout the county, especially in the eastern section. Drivers can volunteer to deliver prepared meals to the homebound elderly weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Meals are picked up from a designated site in the community between 10:30 and 11 a.m. It takes two hours on average to complete a delivery route. During the past 12 months, 1,400 Meals on Wheels volunteers delivered 194,000 meals to approximately 750 older adults in Fairfax County. Demand for the program has grown dramatically as the county's elderly population continues to increase. To volunteer, please call the Meals on Wheels Volunteer Intake Hotline at 703-324-5406, TTY 703-449-1186, or send an e-mail to beverly.mullis@fairfaxcounty.gov. For reasonable ADA accommodations, contact Pam Graff at 703-324-5410, TTY 703-449-1186. Additional information and volunteer job descriptions can be found online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/service/aaa.
  • The "Road Dawgs Summer Camp", a summer camp to teach pre-teens gang-refusal strategies, is a coordinated effort launched by the Fairfax County Police Department, Fairfax County Department of Community and Recreation Services, the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board and Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The four county agencies recruited 35 pre-teens from the Annandale area who are exposed to gangs. While this year's camp focuses on Annandale youth, "Road Dawgs" will be rolled out to other parts of the county in coming years. The week-long day camp will run through Friday, August 20, at a different county facility every day. "Road Dawgs" will focus on three main goals: 1) Increase pre-teens' skills to resist joining gangs and experimentation with tobacco, alcohol and drugs. 2) Provide pre-teens with alternatives to "hanging out" - the unsupervised time when they typically might engage in violence or substance abuse. 3) Introduce pre-teens to the numerous programs and services offered by the police and county human services agencies. At the camp's end, participants will be connected with other county programs and facilities, like the Police Department's "Explorer" program or the RECenters. For more information about the "Road Dawgs Summer Camp," please contact Captain Jack Hurlock with the West Springfield District Police Station at 703-451-5066, TTY 711, or Evan Braff with the Fairfax County Department Community and Recreation Services at 703-324-5650, TTY 711.
  • Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Fairfax County Government Cable Channel 16 broadcasts "The Planning Commission Roundtable," a 30-minute program for citizens, land owners, civic associations and developers who wish to gain a better understanding of the Fairfax County Planning Commission's role in land use planning and development in the county. For the month of August, the program featured is the Geographic Information System. Imagine being able to go to an Internet site, type in a county property address and get a list of zoning hearings pending within a certain area of that address; or being able to view a color-coded map of the county showing the planning districts, voting districts, locations of police and fire stations, or school boundaries; or being able to download and print a map of any parcel in the county. For a summary description of previous "Planning Commission Roundtable" programs, go to www.fairfaxcounty.gov/gov/planning/roundtable.pdf.

Committee News

The Community Affairs Committee is the link between the community and the Chamber and serves to promote the Chamber within the community. Its activities should strengthen the public's awareness of the Chamber's involvement in its community. The committee's chair, Bill Daly (703-790-1911), is seeking volunteers to help in some of the activities including: The annual Halloween Parade, Quarterly Blood Drives, Annual Flu Shot Clinic, East/West Basketball Game, Christmas in April Home Project, Health Fair, Oversee Nonprofit Roundtable, and the VTRCC Halloween Parade Float. Bill can be e mailed at wdaly@rbdlaw.com and hopes to hear from you soon!

The Fundraising Committee is working hard on the upcoming Golf Tournament on October 4th. They have chosen the Vienna Women’s Center to donate a portion of the proceeds. Slots are available for any sponsorships and players. We feel certain we will have a full field this year. Our next focus is the Casino Night-- we already have the "wheels in motion" for next March. We are not sponsoring the Fall Carnival this year, as we are putting more effort in the other events. If any one wants to help with the Fundraising Committee, the Golf Tournament Committee, or the Casino Night Committee, please call Debbie Earman at 703-991-2389.

The Business Development Committee, one of the Chamber’s most active committees, is seeking members to help plan and carry out the committee’s active agenda. Committee chair Joan Fletcher says, “Working on the BDC is one of the best ways that a member can make business contacts throughout the chamber membership and promote business development in the Vienna-Tysons area. The members of this committee are really terrific. We get a lot done for the community, but we have a lot of fun, too.”

  • One BDC initiative is the Business Showcase at the Patriot Center. This year the showcase will be in the spring. It is a great opportunity to be involved in the showcase and have fun with other chamber members.
  • The BDC is also planning a small-business incubator for the Vienna-Tysons area. Planning is at an advanced stage now, but the committee can still use volunteers with good ideas about organizing an incubator for new businesses. The committee expects to be able to launch the incubator in the next few months. Co-chairs of the incubator effort are Bill Daly of the law firm Rees, Broome and Diaz, and Mark Chernisky of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. The incubator has the potential to be one of the most important and most visible projects the Chamber has ever undertaken.
  • Two other BDC projects with high impact and high-visibility are the annual Chair’s Breakfast and the Past Chair’s Breakfast. The Chair’s breakfast introduces each new team of VTRCC officers and board members to the membership and helps mold the leadership into a smooth-functioning team. The Past Chair’s Breakfast enables the new leadership team to learn from the experience and community perspective of the Chamber’s past chairs. Both events are organized by members of the Business Development Committee.

The Business Development Committee welcomes new members. Chamber members who are interested in developing their own businesses and helping others to do so are invited to learn more about the committee. Call committee chair Joan Fletcher of Winning Ways, Inc. at (703) 273-9299 or email jfletcher@winningwaysinc.com. The next BDC meeting will be on September 29. Contact the Chamber office for the location and details.
