November 2005 Once again, this rich Vienna tradition thrilled crowds of adults and children. On Wednesday, October 26 from 7:00-9:00 p.m., community groups, businesses, officials, community groups and hundreds of costumed kids transformed Maple Avenue East into a massive celebration. Floats and walking/dancing units celebrated the theme “The Best Little Town in America: Fourth in the US, #1 in Our Hearts” while Grand Marshals Julian Johnson and DH Scarborough waved to the crowds. The Vienna-Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce was proud to offer their float again this year, loaded with their 2005 award winners. The float was sponsored by Wegmans Market, and carried Business of the Year All Star Movers (Billy Thompson, President); Businessperson of the Year Carole Wolfand (Vienna Paint & Decorating, Co.); Entrepreneur of the Year Katherine Hutt (Nautilus Communications, Inc.); New Member of the Year Russell Brannan (United Stor-All); NonProfit of the Year Vienna Optimist Club (Barbara McHale, President); Citizen of the Year Stacy Capra; and Chairman’s Award Winner Bill Daly (Rees, Broome, Diaz, PC). Lifetime Service Award Winners Julian Johnson and D.H. Scarborough doubled as the Parade’s Grand Marshals. SunTrust Bank East hosted the Chamber’s pre-Parade mixer from 5:00-7:00 p.m., with plenty of food and drink and approximately 100 happy business professionals, elected officials, and award winners. If you missed the Parade, or if you want to relive the magic, order your DVD for just $10. Email parade@vtrcc.org or call 703-281-1333 x21. To preserve the quality of this parade, we rely on our loyal sponsors. Please help us to thank them, and our hard-working committee and volunteers. New Member Benefit! The VTRCC and Aetna are partnering to provide small group health and life insurance services for Chamber members. Two introductory meetings have been scheduled with Chamber members who are licensed to sell group health and life insurance and are currently members in good standing to learn more about this program. These Sessions are being held on Thursday, October 27 at 3:00 p.m. and Friday, November 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the VTRCC Chamber offices, located at 513 Maple Avenue, West. The Lead Share Membership Drive (Tip Groups) is On! Want to have 20-30 people in your marketing department who work for free? That is the basis for the two VTRCC Lead Share Groups. There are two such groups meeting every week; one on Tuesday and one on Thursday at Shula's Steakhouse in the Tysons Corner Marriott. Show up at 12:15 p.m., leave at 1:30 p.m. Take home bona fide leads for more business, knowledge and contacts for better performance. Please RSVP to the groups’ leader, Attorney Harvey A. Silverman at 703-319-8806. Message
from the ChairmanBy Billy Thompson, All-Star Movers 2005-2006 Chairman of the Board In the September issue of the Enterprise I wrote about the upcoming events the Chamber had scheduled and the importance of being involved in these events. Through the hard work of the Chamber Staff (Ellen, Claire and Jan), Tana Keeffe (Long & Foster), Joan Fletcher (Winning Ways, Inc.), Bob Stemetzki (Burdette Smith Group), Rebecca Diamond (Tysons Dodge Jeep), these and many other events were huge successes. Since the Carnival and Golf Tournament, many members have approached me and stated that their involvement or participation were of large benefit to their businesses. Inspired that my advice had been heard and appreciated, I decided that this month I would write concerning another program sponsored by the Chamber. Under the direction of Tip Group Guru Harvey Silverman (Attorney at Law), the VTRCC has two vibrant tip groups. Tip Groups are associations of Chamber members that meet regularly to exchange business leads (tips) and to form associations, operating under the principle that people like to do business with people they know. Tip groups allow their members to network with a variety of professions.
In preparation for this article I spoke with some members of the Tip Groups:

First of all, while I am happy to receive congratulations, this award is for everyone and because of everyone. Past and present Town Councils, board and commission members and Town staff have all contributed to making Vienna an attractive place to live. Town residents deserve credit for their volunteerism, willingness to step up to serve for the good of the Town and for demanding Vienna be a good place to live and raise their families. Town businesses figure into this success picture. When a few business owners came to the late Mayor Charles A. Robinson, Jr. with an idea to revitalize Maple Avenue, it was done. Today we have completed the streetscape from Lawyers Road to East Street. As a result, businesses have renovated their stores and new businesses have been attracted to Vienna. All this doesn't mean we stop with what we have accomplished. We must always be looking for ways to improve our communications with citizens and businesses and looking for ways to improve our safety and quality of life. In the coming year we will be constructing the Town Green, equipping our Police with the latest technology, rebuilding old streets and storm sewers and constructing more sidewalks. The Town government, Town citizens and Town businesses are all partners in Vienna's success. Working together we can continue making Vienna one of the best places to live in the United States. Member News Vienna Tiny Tots Village music instructor Irene Light is the new liaison for the Pickleberry Pie Very Special Concert Series in our area. Pickleberry Pie, Inc. is an experienced non-profit group providing free concerts to local hospitals. Though Pickleberry Pie is a California-based music organization, Light wanted the hospitalized children in our area to benefit from this program. Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children and The Georgetown Pediatrics Division are currently receiving monthly concerts. Barbara Effron of Storytime Express is giving the first performance at both hospitals. It will be on November 8 and is sponsored by The Shelley A. Marshall Foundation. A singing group called Rocknocerus is performing in January. Since there is only enough funding to finance concerts through February, financial assistance to keep this program going would be appreciated. If enough money from grants and donations is received then the program will be expanded to other local hospitals. Please contact Irene Light at 703-281-1536 or email teacher3@cox.net if you wish to help put a smile on the faces of children who need their spirits lifted. Donations are tax-deductible. Best Buy in Tysons Corner would like to invite you to a special Exclusive Shopping Event on November 16, from 8:00-10:00 a.m. Doors will open early for business owners and members of the Chamber, and then open to the public at 10:00 a.m. There will be refreshments and live demos by vendors. The Best Buy for Business team will be there to answer all questions, and help business owners sign up for a free Reward Zone Card. GoodDogz.org is sponsoring their second annual “Home 4 the Holidays” dog adoption event on Saturday, November 19 at the Reston Town Center from 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. More than 20 all-breed and purebred dog rescue organizations will be on-hand with adoptable dogs awaiting their holiday gift—a family to spend the holidays with. Last year, the event hosted over 100 homeless dogs from 18 local rescue groups, over 40 of which found new homes for the holidays. We estimate that the event attracted over 2,000 local pet owners and dog seekers. This year will be even better! Among the participating dog rescue groups are: Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue; Dachshund Rescue of North America; Akita Rescue Mid-Atlantic Coast, Inc.; Ragged Mountain Dogs; Virginia Greyhound Adoption; Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League; Westie Rescue, Inc.; Greyhound Welfare; Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland ; and A Forever Home. For more information, visit www.GoodDogz.org. We look forward to seeing you on November 19! The business community's support for the James Madison High School Band program is well known and greatly appreciated. As a result, the JMHS Band program has flourished providing opportunities and recognition of our children's talents. Recognizing the caliber of our band, the Virginia Music Educators Association extended an invitation for the JMHS Wind Symphony to perform at their annual meeting in Norfolk, VA on November 19. This is a great honor as we are the only one band chosen to represent Northern Virginia at this prestigious event. As a a band organization, we do raise funds to cover the costs of our ongoing expenses; however, the expenses for this event fall outside of or normal budget. We are committed to not having the students contribute any funds towards this event! We are asking for businesses to help send a band member to Norfolk -- it will cost the band parent's $100 per student for transportation and other costs. With your help, we can reach our goal. To make a donation or get additional information, please contact Nancy Boselovic, President of the JMHS Band Parent's organization at jmhsbandprez@aol.com or 703-849-9013. Wendell Presgrave, CEO at My Plumber is excited to launch their food drive, with an ambitious goal of 7,000 pounds of food. The food drive will include all of his employees and neighbors who want to participate. Plus, My Plumber technicians are authorized to give each customer $25 off their bill in exchange for five cans of food. Employees will also be out collecting from local businesses; each business that participates will receive a certificate suitable for framing, My Plumber's thanks on the food drive website as well as a $25 coupon good for future service. The results of all their work will be posted on a new web site: www.warmhandsandfullhearts.com. If you would like to participate in the food drive, contact Susan Phillips at 703-367-7976 or at Susan@myplumber.com. Community News The Fairfax County
Department of Transportation will hold seven public meetings about the
Transportation Plan Update to discuss proposed revisions
to the transportation objectives, policies and appendices, as well as
the most recent travel forecasting results. The Transportation Plan
is an element in the Policy Plan of the Fairfax County Comprehensive
Plan. In 2004, the county started a review of the Transportation Plan
to update policies guiding long-term system improvements. The initial
round of public meetings was held in March 2005 and travel demand workshops
were held in July 2005. Public hearings before the Planning Commission
and the Board of Supervisors are anticipated early next year. The November
public meetings are as follows: Fairfax County Executive Anthony H. Griffin recently gave an Emergency Preparedness presentation to the Board of Supervisors. “Fairfax County: The State of Emergency Planning and Preparedness," covered six major areas: The progress the county has made since Sept. 11, 2001; an overview of the county's emergency management response and outline of who is in charge during an incident; evacuation plans, especially in light of recent events with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in New Orleans and Texas; the needs and responses by the county to special populations; the ways the county communicates with its residents and internally with key responders; and a future action plan for continued efforts the county can undertake. A number of former residents and their families came back for the event and were joined by judges and county officials, including Hunter Mill District Supervisor Catherine Hudgins. The community-based group home serves 12 residents at a time who range in age from 13 to 17, and stay for a period of three to six months. The family-oriented treatment program is for girls involved in chronic status offenses and/or delinquent behavior who are placed there by the court to change behavior that has resulted in their court involvement. This approach has been used as the model for Fairfax County's Boys Probation House, as well as for other local residential treatment facilities. Fairfax 2007 Commemoration — Fairfax County was recognized in January 2005 by Gov. Mark R. Warner as part of the Virginia 2007 Community Program, established to expand tourism, economic development and educational opportunities throughout the state in preparation for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Virginia and Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. Fairfax County agreed to follow a five-step process consisting of creating a citizen planning committee; adopting a project that highlights the county's history; examining the county's strengths and weaknesses to discover ways to make it a better place to work, live and visit; adopting a project to be completed in 2007 that will be a lasting legacy for present and future citizens of the county; and planning activities in 2007 that will invite visitors from around the world to visit Fairfax County. A Citizen Planning Committee has been appointed of residents who represent the diversity of communities and resources in the county. The book will feature vignettes, anecdotal articles, photos and essays that highlight the history of Fairfax County through the last 400 years, since the founding of Jamestown in 1607. The committee is soliciting original, non-published, history-related items for publication in the book. Each contribution - written, photographic or other - must be the sole property of the person submitting it, or it must be shown that the owner has given permission for its use. The volunteer authors will have the satisfaction of being a part of this great project and having their work reflect the pride Fairfax County residents feel about the rich and diverse history that will carry through over the next 100 years. The publication will contain a minimum of four vignettes, anecdotal articles or essays from each of the last four centuries, 1607-2007, for a total of at least 16 selections. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2006, with selections made by Sept. 1, 2006. Download a submission form at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/opa/va2007.
