Community Commitment and the 60th Annual Halloween Parade
by VTRCC President Diane Poldy
Because VTRCC has the word “commerce” in its
name, it is often assumed that the Chamber is only
about business. In fact, “Our Mission is to provide a
strategic link between business and the
community...” We care about and work to support
the community as much as the businesses in it. The
successful partnership of business and community is
a primary reason Vienna was selected by Money
Magazine’s 2005 survey as the 4th best place to live
in the United States.
The 60th Annual Vienna Halloween Parade is an
example of the Chamber’s commitment to and
involvement in the community. Begun by the
Chamber to celebrate and entertain Vienna’s children,
the Parade evolved into a partnership with the Town
of Vienna and its Department of Parks and
Recreation. It has become a celebration of what
Vienna stands for in the Metro DC area– a
real “community” where businesses, residents and
government work together.
This year the parade highlights “Vienna’s Traditions
Through the Decades” led by Grand Marshals Clarene
Vickery of Parkwood Elementary School and Joyce
Decker, founder of Tiny Tots Village. These two
educators have helped grow generations of Vienna’s
kids into the residents and business people that make
Vienna the community everyone wants to celebrate.

Bob Stemetzki is a Chamber member who just keeps
on going. . .and giving. After finishing his term as
Chairman of the Board, Bob then moved into chairing
the Annual Carnival in 2005 and 2006, making this
event at Nottoway Park one of the outstanding
family events in the community each year. Bob
believes the Chair of the event works harder and
longer than anyone else involved, so he parks cars,
totes ice, shuttles pizza, puts up signs, sets up and
takes down booths. . .and the list goes on. Thank
you, Bob for all your service to the Chamber and the
community.
